About Us

The Styring Group is based in the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering at The University of Sheffield. Our main research activities are focused on Carbon Dioxide Capture & Utilisation, Developing Circular Economic Ecosystems and Air Quality in Cities, Megacities and Rural Environments.

Our Philosophy

The climate emergency is upon us and we need to act quickly to slow any adverse changes to the environment. We need to find new ways to avert carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. Perhaps more importantly we need to find ways to use the otherwise waste carbon dioxide in a circular economy to replace fossil carbon.

However, we cannot look at carbon dioxide in isolation. When we change a variable we will almost certainly change others so we need to look at the whole system, not an isolated intervention. We need to ensure emissions are considered using complete life cycle assessments and if feasible apply techno-economic analysis to ensure commercial viability. We also need to consider the social impacts of any technological interventions.

Beyond carbon dioxide emissions we also need to be aware of other pollutants that cause damage to the environment. The Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 resulted in a significant reduction in road traffic which led to the observation of other pollutants in the air. Our philosophy is to consider the whole system and not leave any stone unturned. We provide science and engineering-based evidence so that decisions can be made that are able to be held to account.
