Air Quality and COVID-19 Lockdown

On March 19 2020 we were due to host a conference on the science, engineering and policy surrounding clean air zones in cities such as Sheffield. The crisis surrounding the COVID-19 virus lead to the event being postponed to a later date. However, it also gave us the opportunity to assess pollution levels once traffic density fell. Using the daily exercise recommendations, Styring took to his bike, and equipped with an air quality monitor, took readings on various routes around Sheffield South West and the city centre. The work will hopefully be published this summer but in the meantime, here is an article published in the Yorkshire Post on 20 April.

The work was also highlighted in a video which was published on Earth Day 2020.
