Research Associate in Chemical & Biological Engineering at The University of Sheffield.

Hello, my name is Ed Platt and I am a PhD researcher originally from York. As a graduate of the University of Sheffield with an MEng in Chemical Engineering with Energy, the uncertain future of the planet was a core and common focus throughout my undergraduate studies, with many modules painting a Malthusian picture of the current non-renewable industries and the problems that society faces as a result. This in turn grew my curiosity surrounding the different directions that industries will have to take as a means of working towards a sustainable and circular future. I completed my Masters thesis under supervision of Professor Styring, in which the viability of a Clean Air Zone within Sheffield City Centre was investigated, which in turn opened my eyes to the world of environmental policy from a relatively non-technical point of view. My decision to pursue a PhD as a part of the Styring Group was a no brainer, as it serves as a fantastic opportunity to build on my past projects and curiosities within a professional research environment. Now, my main areas of research are life cycle and techno-economic analyses surrounding short and medium chain organics, as well as their applications within industry.

Outside of academia, I am an avid musician and music collector. I have played the alto saxophone for over 15 years now and play as a part of the Sheffield Music Players’ Society band. I also have an extensive record collection, with a keen interest in techno, electronic and ambient music. Further on from music, I am also a co-founder and technician of a local improvised comedy group, with whom I have performed at several comedy festivals and shows throughout Sheffield and surrounding cities. I have also provided sound design for several drama societies within the University and have enjoyed being a cog within many successful shows. I’m also an avid walker and really enjoy exploring the Peak District, which quickly became one of my favourite places in the country when I moved to Sheffield.
