Research Associate in Chemical & Biological Engineering at The University of Sheffield.

Alex Newman graduated from the University of Sheffield as part of its Class of 2020, achieving a master’s degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering with first class honours. As part of his fourth-year research project he worked with the Styring group where he developed techno-economic and carbon footprint models for the production of green dimethyl ether (DME). In the third-year design project he worked within a student team to design and specify a process plant for the production of bioethanol, developing skills in process design and optimisation. His academic interests lie in the areas of life cycle analysis and carbon capture and utilisation (CCU). Alex is now a PhD student within the Styring group, working alongside strategic partner Unilever. His work focusses on the analysis of soda ash production with respect to CO2 emission reductions; aiming to identify a future net-zero supply chain in which fossil carbon is not utilised.

Outside of his academic activities Alex is pursuing a long-standing interest in aviation, working towards his private pilot’s license flying a Cessna 152. Alex is also a keen runner, currently building up to his goal of completing a sub four-hour marathon. He also harbours an interest in cooking; enjoying the Italian style, and wine, in particular.
